Why Bikeability?
Bikeability cycle training equips children with vital life skills. Pupils not only learn to cycle, they gain independence, social skills and a sense of wellbeing.
After Bikeability, children are better at responding to risk and report increased confidence. As a result, more children cycle to school which in turn improves mental health and wellbeing. This allows children to get more out of the classroom, improving their attention span and engagement. Healthier habits lead to increased attendance and improved academic results. Bikeability goes beyond a training course; it impacts children’s lives.
The Department for Transport funds Bikeability cycle training for schools. The Bikeability Trust distributes this funding across England to local authorities. However, not all schools currently receive funding – if you don’t, but you want to, get in touch with your local authority.
We want to help you embed active travel into your school.
You already know the benefits, but we’ve made it easy to encourage active travel. As well as Bikeability training, we have developed a toolkit of curriculum-linked resources for EYFS, KS1 and KS2. These “Tools for Schools” include:

Tools for Schools in action
In January 2021, we launched a competition in partnership with Frog Bikes. The challenge? Design your own cycle jersey, using our Tools for Schools activity. One lucky winner would win their own Frog Bike.
Then, England entered lockdown. Suddenly, everyone needed activities to keep their children entertained. Yet again, parents had to juggle childcare with working from home. Our Tools for Schools came to the rescue!
Over 1000 children entered our competition. Every single entry was fantastic. Children loved designing their dream jersey – and parents and teachers loved that it kept them busy!
Our winning entry stood out thanks to its eye-catching frog design and brilliant sequins. We loved the added sparkle – and a great way to stay visible whilst cycling too.
